The Cellar's History reflects the rich heritage of the
town of Rossland, BC, where the gold rush started in 1890 and transformed
a small town into a prosperous mining community of the times. By
1897, the population of Rossland had increased to 7,000 and the town could boast
42 saloons and 17 law firms. Rossland had quickly become one of the
largest cities in Western Canada and a major business center in North
America. The Cellar's original space in the basement of
the historic Bank of Montreal building was home to a bathhouse and Judge
Plewman's quarters during these exciting and historical times.
Over the years and until World War II,
mining played an important part in the history of Rossland. During
and after WWII, Rossland became a bedroom and family community to the
nearby city of Trail and the population stabilized at near 3,000 people for many
years. Since that time, the splendor of the Kootenays and all its recreational opportunities
have increasingly dominated the area's activities and focus.
In 1988, The Cellar Fibre Studio was
founded in the Bank of Montreal's basement space after a theatrical fashion show
staged for the world press at the Women's Husky World Cup Downhill race
at Red Mountain. The show featured the unique and colorful
sweaters and jackets made in The Cellar Fibre Studio and designed by its local
artists. This was the beginning of the tradition of a center of handcrafted Canadian gifts in the basement of the historic
Bank of Montreal building.
In the basement of the Bank of
Montreal building, The Cellar became well
established in its reputation for carrying high quality, reasonably priced
Canadian made products from one coast to another. The nooks and corners of
this interesting space were always filled with pleasant surprises of
fashion, home and giftware pieces. The Cellar's tradition of
offering the distinctive works of the best of Canadian artists became
well-established in this space.
Today, The Cellar is in its
new space, Out of the Cellar, an exciting and more spacious
location on the main street of downtown Rossland. The new
gallery-like space allows for an even better shopping experience and
The Cellar continues to seek and offer distinctive works
by the best of Canadian artists, encouraging shoppers to visit The Cellar
just to see what's new in clothing, home decor,
bath and body and jewelry.
The Cellar is now a
complete shopping experience that mixes fashion with home decor and giftware in a
unique shopping environment -- destination shopping at its best.
